Här fanns troligen en forntida cermoniell samlingsplats. På strandvallen västerut finns lämningar av gravhögar från järnåldern, i en mängd som gör det troligt att hela den nordöstra udden var en begravningsplats. Sänkan mellan strandvallen och den här platsen kallas i folkmun Hjerteskeppet, efter föreställningen om att ett jättelikt skepp ska ha strandat här och begravts.
Skulpturen är utformad som en trappa med fyra trappsteg till vänster och fem trappsteg till höger. Den som går medurs känner skillnaden i steghöjd - till vänster är den standard och till höger upplevs den som annorlunda.

There was probably an ancient ceremonial gathering place here. On the seawall to the west there are remains of burial mounds from the Iron Age, in a quantity that makes it likely that the whole of the north-east headland was a burial ground. The sinkhole between the seawall and this place is popularly called the Hjerteskeppet, after the notion that a giant ship must have run aground here and been buried.
The sculpture is designed as a staircase with four steps on the left and five steps on the right. Those who walk clockwise feel the difference in step height - on the left it is according to standard and on the right it is perceived as different.

Past and Presence är ett samarbete mellan konstnärerna Ebba Bohlin och Anna Ridderstad som undersöker landskap, historia och ekologi. Under 2022 och 2023 befann sig Past and Presence på norra Öland, med nedslag i bland annat en övergiven järnåldersby och en rituell plats där himmel och hav möts bakom en avskiljande mur.
Past and Presence is a collaboration between artists Ebba Bohlin and Anna Ridderstad, which investigates landscape, history and ecology. In 2022 and 2023, Past and Presence took place in northern Öland, focusing on an abandoned Iron Age village and a ritual site where sky and sea meet behind a separating wall.
