En natt i juni flyttade skulpturen ut och lyste upp mörkret, lockade alla de som vi vanligtvis inte ser: de nattaktiva insekterna. Vi fick möjlighet att betrakta dem, och skulpturen blev en plats eller en scen. I utställningsrummet finns enbart en tom skulptur. Vi ser avsaknaden av insekter, eller vissheten att om den var på andra sidan av fönstret skulle den locka till sig en mångfald. Här visar skulpturen det tomma rummet. Ett rum skapat för en enda art. En tomhet som blir synlig i kontrast till mångfalden utanför.
Kan vi visa empati för det vi inte ser? Vad händer om utsidan blir lika tom på liv?

One night in June, the sculpture moved out and lit up the darkness, attracting all those we don't usually see: the nocturnal insects. We had the opportunity to look at them, and the sculpture became a place or a scene. In the exhibition room there is only an empty sculpture. We see the absence of insects, or the certainty that if it were on the other side of the window it would attract a multitude. Here the sculpture shows the empty room. A room created for a single species. An emptiness that becomes visible in contrast to the diversity outside.
Can we show empathy for what we don't see? What happens if the outside becomes just as empty of life?
The nightly encounter between the sculpture and the insects was shown in the film room.

Past and Presence är ett samarbete mellan konstnärerna Ebba Bohlin och Anna Ridderstad som undersöker landskap, historia och ekologi. Under 2022 och 2023 befann sig Past and Presence på norra Öland, med nedslag i bland annat en övergiven järnåldersby och en rituell plats där himmel och hav möts bakom en avskiljande mur.
Past and Presence is a collaboration between artists Ebba Bohlin and Anna Ridderstad, which investigates landscape, history and ecology. In 2022 and 2023, Past and Presence took place in northern Öland, focusing on an abandoned Iron Age village and a ritual site where sky and sea meet behind a separating wall.
